i is back

Yeah.

After weeklong internet nightmares,

I is officially back.

And just to clear the air:

It’s Rogue, people, not Rouge.

Rouge is French for “red”.

Pronounced “roooj”

Rogue is English for “Rebel”, “Scoundrel”, “Pariah”.

Pronounced “rowg”

So it’s Rogue King.

As in rebellious royalty.

He he he.

Just sayin,

Learn the difference.

Give the props.

Rogue out.

the power of a moment

My first introduction to the Dove Awards was in high school, Senior Six. I was fixing someone’s walkman (yes, I had a wicked tech-guy reputation in school), when I asked for some tapes so I could test to see how awesome my work was. He handed me two Dove Awards tapes, and therein began my obsession with contemporary Gospel music.

I discovered the Veggie Tales, Michael W Smith, Twila Paris, Third Day, Fernando Ortega and Chris Rice.

Chris Rice has turned out to be one of my favourite Gospel artists. His lyrics are so simple to the point of being almost childish, but the messages, while simple are amazingly profound. The first song I listened to on those Dove Awards tapes was “The Power of a Moment” and the message stuck with me to this day.

Here’s an excerpt from the lyrics [emphasis mine]:

BHH, Thursday 27th February

First, the next Blogger’s Happy Hour will be this Thursday, 27th February. Darlyne insists that we all come ready to discuss the Uganda Best of Blog Awards. We need to pave a way forward. Tumwijuke, it would be great to have you there.

Global Voices
I’ve been informed that Global Voices may be looking for a new Uganda Editor. I’ll pass on the details as I get them.

Moving On

No more bollocks – Season 1.

Ever feel like you’re simply too stressed or too tired or too exhausted to do some of the things you’re supposed to do? Well, that’s how I feel right now. At first I thought it was because I was taking on too much, but after some critical months-long analysis, I realised it’s because I’m simply failing to prioritize my goals / objectives and achievements.

of sundays and tweets and [ shout outs ]

I love Sundays. They have this delightfuly lazy aspect to them. None of the hustles of a programme packed Saturday, nor the trepidation of a Monday. Sundays are languorously in between. [ TRP say what? ] And today was awesome.

Twitter, at 220/= per SMS, is a waste of precious airtime, to the average Ugandan, unless of course, you work at a telecom company [ hi Darlyne! ] or have 24 hour access to the internet for free [ hi Darlyne!! ].

However, for some reason, I occasionally tweet from my phone. I’ve somehow transceded the allusion that airtime is expensive and I see it as a neccessity. Painful? Yes. Irrelevant? Perhaps? Capitalistic? Most definitely. But a necessity nonetheless. [ Salutations, Comrade, and Communist-Damsel ]

But still, I occasionally indulge the rebel in me and lavishly spend airtime tweeting. Today I spent a whooping 2200/= on tweets! Yes, sweetheart, I know I should’ve called you, but… [ you know who you are! sup gorgeous! ]

So, to give a rough summary of my day, here are the tweets!

Facebook’s Woes : A Devil’s Advocate Perspective

Yes, we’re still talking about Facebook, but on a broader level now, we’re looking at what exactly is the bigger picture behind sharing information on a Social Network. It is a community based analysis of the rationale behind an fairly expansive Terms of Service.

Disclaimer
I’m not an expert at the detailed technical intricacies of Social Networks, but being a Web 2.0 enthusiast and entreprenuer, I believe I can give my own perspective. If any information is inaccurate due to the limitations of my knowledge, do let me know and I will correct them.

First off, as much as Facebook was wrong (or very poorly worded its terms of service), you have to realise that you are under no obligation whatsoever to put up all your personal information on Facebook. If you’re severely concerned about privacy, you shouldn’t be using any form of social network or friend-network or online information sharing service. Actually, you shouldn’t even be using free email providers.

And speaking of free email providers…

A Little History

Microsoft at one point was the focus of much criticism over Passport, its central password repository for Hotmail, MSN Messenger and other Microsoft networks.

About seven years ago, while working for an internet Cafe, I took the time to read Hotmail’s terms of service (yes, I had that much time on my hands), and one little part stuck with me to this day. What it effectively stated was that anything you transmitted via email belonged to Hotmail / MSN / Passport. Yes, everything.

Facebook says it owns your content forever…

For those of you who haven’t been following this, I figured I’d give you a small heads up.

Over the last few days there has been uproar over Facebook’s new terms of service. The new TOS basically stated that they owned everything you put on their site, forever, even if you closed your account.

The section that particularly caused concern was:

You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any User Content you (i) Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings or (ii) enable a user to Post, including by offering a Share Link on your website and (b) to use your name, likeness and image for any purpose, including commercial or advertising, each of (a) and (b) on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof.

five things I discovered in the past week

Last week was tumultous, to say the least. And monumental, for brevity’s sake. The weekend, however was singularly sarcastic.

I intended to go for the Lantern Meet’s monthly poetry do, but circumstances beyond my control [a.k.a Murphy's Law] prohibited me from doing do. My sincerest apologies, again, Coffee Addict.

Still, I had a good time, as always.

Where was I? Oh yes, five things I discovered last week.

1.0 I’m a Scanner.

After years of trying to figure out why I want to do so many things and why I end up enjoying almost everything I jump into [ and having a small measure of success ], to the point of not being able to solidly focus on some, I decided to do a little research on managing a career for a multi-talented person. I stumbled upon a description of the exact situation I’m dealing with. I’ll let the description say it best.

“A scanner is the contrary of a specialist. Scanners are unable to choose one single passion or career, and if they force themselves to do so, they suffer (and their productivity suffers, too). Scanners don’t have only one field of interest, they have many of them. They seem to be interested in just everything. They usually have many projects running at the same time, and permanently come up with some great new idea. They also tend not to implement their ideas or not to finish the projects they start”.

I know this may be an over-generalisation, or perhaps an over-simplification, either way, I’ve realised that it’s a thing to celebrate. And celebrate I will.

we resume regular programming

Hello good folks!

First off, many thanks for the glad tidings and birthday wishes! You guys rock!

Well, I’m still here, still breathing, despite many people’s superstitious beliefs and dire prophecies (Johnie,  Jason, Denis, Martha, The Emrys, and Cheri, I’m lookin at you!!).

Day didn’t go at all according to plan. Thought I’d get some money yesterday and do some crazy stuff.

Here was my plan: I was going to pack a few clothes, head to the bus park and randomly pick a bus and get on it, excluding Gulu, Hoima, Jinja and Mbale, as I’ve been to those places. After that, I don’t know what I’d do. Sounded too exciting to not do.

Sadly, the money I was expecting didn’t come through, and I was already raining down curses upon whichever god-forsaken idiot had caused this to happen, when it hit me that I should be thankful, who knows what the trip had in store for me…

Anyways, a friend took me out for lunch, she was awesome company and we ended up chilling from like 2:30 to 8:00pm. Some lunch huh? Anyways, after that, I had to dash to office to sort out some emergency.

All in all, Friday the 13th rocked! And yeah, again, I’m still here, older, much more foolish, and much more childish. Sounds like fun times.

And now, our regular programming.

On Rogue 132.26 FM: Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby and MC Hammer – Can’t Touch This!

These were sent to me by some friends on Facebook. Thanks Noah and Edward!

Isaiah 66:7-9

7 “Before she goes into labor,
she gives birth;
before the pains come upon her,
she delivers a son.

8 Who has ever heard of such a thing?
Who has ever seen such things?
Can a country be born in a day
or a nation be brought forth in a moment?
Yet no sooner is Zion in labor
than she gives birth to her children.

9 Do I bring to the moment of birth
and not give delivery?” says the LORD.
“Do I close up the womb
when I bring to delivery?” says your God.

Deuteronomy 1:11

‘May the LORD, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand-fold more than you are and bless you, just as He has promised you!

for whom the bell tolls a.k.a my birthday cometh

At midnight tonight, I take the final step that crosses  the bridge over the great divide. I’ll officially be in my late twenties. Oh how the years fly.

The Rogue King turns 26 on February, Friday the 13th! How cool is that? And if you divide 26 by Feb(2), you get Thirteen (this friday)! Even cooler!

Me thinks this year is going to be especially blessed! Oh yeah baby! And the next 25 years? Supercoolawesomemajorlyradicalinasuperfunkyway!

Whatchu say Abba? Awesome, right right? YEAH!

Oh, The Dark Knight is away brooding, as usual, something about unresolved villains from the past 25 years. He says hello though.

Now.

Interesting bits of trivia:

1. My dad wasn’t too sure if I was born on the 13th of Feb or 15th of March. All he knew was that it was the Ides of one of them. I settled for Feb, because I liked number 13. For all I know, I could still be 25. Who cares?

2. Thirteen was once my favourite number, especially when I discovered everyone else thinks it’s superstitious.

I wonder how both those facts have affected my life in general. Not enough to spend sleepless nights over, I warrant.

[ Wikipedia ]: The term ides was used for the 15th day of the months of March, May, July, and October, and the 13th day of the other eight months.

And now to get wasted.

12 books I want to read in the next 12 months

It’s been a crazy two weeks. Been doing lots of rounds along the global domination plans, aka business as usual, and not doing anything roguish. Which kinda sucks. It also means I haven’t been reading too many blogs lately, so I don’t know much of what’s going on in the Ugandan Blogsphere, let alone my global RSS feeds.

And my apologies for the lethargy in posting.

Moving on.

In an infectious spirit that grabs all of us during a certain point of our lives every year, and irrevocably traumatizes us for the reminder of that year, I’m making a few lists, starting of course with the most literal ones. The lists will be in twelves, one for each month of the year, with a bonus thrown in as number thirteen, which will make sense in a couple of days.

Without further ado, here is list one.

12 books I want to read in the next 12 months.

I used to be an avid reader, at the peak of my reading I’d be doing an average of two novels a week, on top of my regular work related stuff. Let’s just say I don’t remember much from those novels.

I’m still an avid reader, but my reading is now restricted to blogs and business journals. Not entirely a bad thing, but I still miss the feel of a good paperback in my hands on a lazy afternoon.

Anyways, there are a few too many books I’ve been promising to pick up / buy / steal / borrow but I’ve never gotten round to doing so. I plan to pick up / buy / borrow / steal them within the next few months. They are:
