photography – fooling around with a canon digital rebel

I love photography, y’all know that. And the Canon Digital Rebel range is very high on the list of cameras I’d like to own, for three reasons; they sound cool, they are actually very brilliant DSLRs and they are affordable, especially the older models.

As luck would have it, last week, for a few hours, I got a chance to play with a Canon Digital Rebel XT. I couldn’t fool around much with ISO settings and light metering and whatnot because the owner was heading for a wedding to take photos and I didn’t want to mess up anything (seeing as he had no idea what I was talking about, life would probably get a lot more complex for him if I changed anything.)

However, I promptly switched to manual focus and began checking out what it could do.

The Settings
First, for those interested, I shot using the body lens, 18-55mm, no external lenses. Most shots were 25-50mm though. ISO was at 800. Shutter speed and exposure were on auto, and seemed to oscillate between 1/60s and 1/200s.

The Photos.

This is my first time with an DSLR, heck, it’s my first time with anything other than a point and shoot, so please be gentle.

Also, my human subjects are not too ecstatic about being put on the internet, so I have to leave shots with people out. And lastly, I took hundreds of photos. I’ve simply picked out some of the nicest ones. They will get better with time, I can promise you that.

So here we go.

01. Animal Kingdom.

These were taken in the office compound. It’s a pretty large compound. We did some basic landscaping and planted lots of flowers here.

02. Bookworm

Fooling around with shots of books n stuff. Both home and at the office.

03. Dexter & Company.

I got this Dexter toy thing in a cornflakes box about 4 years ago, so he keeps getting in all sorts of silly situations. The hut I made years ago, from glue, broomsticks, paper and twigs. It was supposed to be an entire village. The two stick dudes I bought from a neighbor to support his crafts business.

04. Products.

A few random shots where I’m testing product photography. Shots like this would properly need a studio setup, good lighting and all.

05. Miscellaneous.

Well… like the name suggests. The things that couldn’t really find a category.

06. Self Portrait.

Monumental goofing around.

And that’s it for now. Hopefully I’ll get a change to play with another DSLR, maybe with a lens this time. If not, oh well, I’m still saving up for mine. I’m at 210,000/= now ( 21 weeks so far ). I’ve got about 1,090,000/= to go. I started saving 10,000/= per week for a DSLR.

For my point and shoot shots (closeups taken using macro mode) please see here, here, here and here.

It’s an amazing camera. An old model, but sweet nonetheless. Imagine if you threw in a telephoto lens.

Thank you. I figured the book(s) would draw you more.

      2 monsters? Elaborate, s’il vous plait…

Next time I lay my hands on a DSLR, you’ll get your guitars.

There is this new Canon EOS 1D Mark III I absolutely fell in love with…Saving for it is not possible Am just waiting and praying for the price to fall as the Economy rises.

The pics it does compared to the EOS 5D Mark II are out of this world.

For the moment am content with the point and shoots’s

But the Nikkon 90D is still at the top of my list. For now.

I had that exact same Dexter on my office desk for years!

Beautiful pics… a few more years practicing and I may allow you to take my first portrait.

Thank you Mama Pete. I agree, the practice is needed, but you forget I already have an unofficial portrait.

You can do a lot with a point and shoot camera, I know, ask me. In other wards, defending them, and you blaming the tools, shyaaa!

But these are inspiring. I prefer portraits so where does one get to see them? some closed house gallery?
