a little more seriousness please…

First off, the 6th installment of 1001 Tales is up at 2weakdudes.com. Go check it out.

Secondly, I’m working on a followup article to the starting a business series, so I can’t write anything tangible today.

Ergo, I’ll leave you with a little food for thought, very brief.

Sometime last year, I read a small blog post somewhere about how much worth we assign to the things we do. And it got me thinking.

We’re almost always measured by the things we do, measured by our fellow man, ourselves and always by God. And yet sometimes we do them as if they didn’t matter to anyone. Like we couldn’t be bothered whatever the outcome of our work.

For example:

You’re a secretary or receptionist at some job that you loathe, and you spend the whole day filing your nails or chatting on phone with your pals. Does it hurt to do your job right? Someone is always noticing, and it could be the next person whose office you go to for an interview.

Or the classic case of the boda guys who know very well that the fare to a place is 1000/= but they insist on charging 1500/= and in the process get fewer customers during the day, and then lament about their woes. This extends to almost all businesses. What does it hurt to charge a decent rate and maintain a good reputation, instead of trying to get rich as fast as possible.

Or the thousands of waitresses and shopkeepers who treat us as if they’re doing us a favour. Should they be happy we’re in their shops or restaurants, where their paycheck comes from?

Someone else is watching your reputation take a nose dive, but what are you doing about it?

Someone else is taking your works seriously. Why arent you?

Someone else will promote or fire you based on your work. Do you have the guts to promote or fire yourself?

You complain too much about how you’re unlucky. Why not make your own luck?

We hold other people to so much scrutiny, but we never take ourselves seriously.

Why?

Many a man’s reputation would not know his character if they met on the street.

It would appear to me that the issue of reputation in Ug is actually not an issue. Nobody cares. From the humble serving lady at your kafunda to the Member of parliament. It’s just nuts and terribly disturbing. I for one feel ashamed of some of the things I do as if no one’s watching. Abba is seriously dealing with me on this. Character and Integrity is everything.

My biggest problem is with people who over charge ” I had 20k in my wallet had gone to apply for a visa but 4 some reason my application couldn’t be scanned wen i got to the embassy so went to Kabalagala to print out a new form…..they were 3 pgs and the guy charged me 5k per page…… I told God it was unfair and if i didn’t get the visa i would deeply be hurt.

I have never gotten over that…….Why is it next impossible for people to do the right thing?

I have come to learn that no matter what you do, you are never going to get a perfect score from everybody. so screw the measurements and judgements and shit. I do what i please. If i am happy, everybody else should be. Unless they are playing on a different team.

There’s a woman outside Steakout who adds 500 shillings to every airtime card. She’s a phone whore. I’ll burn her with a cigarette one day.
