diwali, walk of life and free robotics lessons from Stanford

First off, in case you missed them, two new “writing on the fly” pieces at 2 W.E.A.K Dudes :  1001 Tales – Gabriel and 1001 Tales – Two.

I’m supposed to be going for the Diwali celebrations today, they’re normally at Munyonyo. An no, silly, I’m not Hindu. It’s just that ever since an Indian friend took me there a few years back, I’ve been hooked. The food, the crowd, the culture, the music, the fireworks, it all just one big crazy experience.

I fell in love with a girl there one a couple of years back. She was beautiful, gorgeous, witty beyond belief, adventurous, and a major life-ist, but you know, that’s a tale for another day.

Thing is, for the last two years, it’ been getting gradually boring… or maybe the novelty is beginning to wear off for me. But that’s not the reason I’m going.

I’m not going because I’m unbelievably broke, and I have a tonne of work to catch up on. So I’m sitting home, chilling with Evenstar. I’m making good progress, trying to master a few more chords and learning to strum to  a simplified version of Walk of Life, by Dire Straits. Rockin!

I also discovered that Stanford University School of Engineering is offering three courses online, free of charge! How cool is that?? Okay, not so cool for most of you, but for me, it was like :O! Sweeeeeet!

People ask me if I’ll ever go back to school (after dropping out of university in the first semester) and I tell them, there’s only one course that will take me back to school. Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. And since it’s not available in Uganda, maybe even East Africa, I’ll settle for learning it on my own.

And now Stanford University is offering it free!! The courses they’re offering are:

  • Introduction to Computer Science
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Linear Systems and Optimization

I’m in bliss. I downloaded the first lecture  of Introduction to Robotics and I was like whooooooooooaaaa.

Only problem is the videos are huge and they take like days to come down. Very annoying. Oh well, they’re free! Wooohooohooo!

*gently floats back down to earth.

Have a lovely weekend peoples.

hmmm… I’m not too sure, Chanel.

Designing an advert? Unless you’re talking about in depth market/demographic analysis and consumer psychology, you should be able to pull that off in Uganda without going to school :)

Quoting Marvin is something DK would do.

Funny thing is, I have been attending the Diwali festival at Munyonyo for the past three years. But I did not go this time either – had to attend a funeral.

I like to sample the food and buy my own fireworks to join the fun.

@Miss Cheri, money will make thee mad. hehehe.

@mamapete, lol, what’s with peolpe trying to isolate DK and SK and RK? Yes, I do love the Ks’. And buying your own fireworks just completes the experience.

@Minty, try to go before the whole thing fizzles out. I hear it gets more and more boring each year that passes.

@Sybella, my weekend was super boring. I had to work too. Let’s go drown our miseries in something like pork.

    Dude. 10 minutes?

I wish you could download them all and send them to me. For me to get all the videos from the three courses means like another year or so!

There are quite a few of the US universities offering their course lectures for video download. I ended up staying at one of their sites for the whole night watching some about electromagnetism!

Hey. i have no idea how node six works; computers and i don’t quite gel. However, i would like to get a cool looking page like the Weak Dudes. I have no idea how to edit my template on blogger, nor have i been able to interprete the gibberish on the internet about codes, html and the like.
    i am asking for help.
    ok, that wasn’t so hard.
    i know i’m a stranger here but i’m hoping you’re a kind soul.

@Andy Bailey, thanks for dropping by. Do you have those links to the free courses? I’m a learning addict.

@Ms Caffeine. You are no stranger. Think you can make it for BHH? We can discuss then.
