five things I discovered in the past week

17 Feb

Last week was tumultous, to say the least. And monumental, for brevity’s sake. The weekend, however was singularly sarcastic.

I intended to go for the Lantern Meet’s monthly poetry do, but circumstances beyond my control [a.k.a Murphy's Law] prohibited me from doing do. My sincerest apologies, again, Coffee Addict.

Still, I had a good time, as always.

Where was I? Oh yes, five things I discovered last week.

1.0 I’m a Scanner.

After years of trying to figure out why I want to do so many things and why I end up enjoying almost everything I jump into [ and having a small measure of success ], to the point of not being able to solidly focus on some, I decided to do a little research on managing a career for a multi-talented person. I stumbled upon a description of the exact situation I’m dealing with. I’ll let the description say it best.

“A scanner is the contrary of a specialist. Scanners are unable to choose one single passion or career, and if they force themselves to do so, they suffer (and their productivity suffers, too). Scanners don’t have only one field of interest, they have many of them. They seem to be interested in just everything. They usually have many projects running at the same time, and permanently come up with some great new idea. They also tend not to implement their ideas or not to finish the projects they start”.

I know this may be an over-generalisation, or perhaps an over-simplification, either way, I’ve realised that it’s a thing to celebrate. And celebrate I will.

2.0 I have a thing for Murphy’s Law

You all know Murphy’s Law, right? It broadly states:

“Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.”

or better still

“Whatever can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time, in the worst possible way”.

Murphy’s law has a thing for me, and over time, I’ve developed a thing for Murphy’s Law. I’ve learnt to accept it and actually embrace it. First, I like the spontaneity and fun (sometimes) of dealing with challenges as they’re thrown at you. It’s almost like Mathematical Game Theory, where you deal with issues in realtime, pushing your ability to adapt and improvise and arrive at a solution in the shortest possible time.

Secondly, at the end of whatever issue you’ve just gotten through, you realise that the same stuff cannot worry you again, because you know at least one way of going about it, but most importantly, you know you can overcome it.

3.0 I can actually dance. No. Seriously. I can. Seriously! Whaaat?

LOL. I can already see some people laughing their heads off, but work with me.

The circumstances under which I discovered this will be kept secret for a while longer. Dancing and cooking are two things I’ve openly admitted I cannot do.

Cooking is a massive fail. First, I dont like it, second, I don’t have the patience. See [ 2 Weak Dudes - Food 101 ] and [ 2 Weak Dudes - Ricescapades ] for past experiences.

As for dancing, all I can do is slow dance. This boisterous BBoyLatinoSalsaFoxtrot stuff? Nope. But heck I’m going to learn! Volunteers?

4.0 I frankly, honestly, seriously do not give a hoot.

Several [very many] years ago, after a particularly traumatic period, I decided to stop trying to please every one. I was living for others and in the process, ignoring the fact that I was living a life that they had created for me in their minds. And because so many people influenced my life, I was beginning to get fragmented, so to speak. So I made a resolve.

It hasn’t been easy, and it’s taken time. But it finally hit me last week when I was making all these grand plans for my birthday, that I actually, honestly, seriously do not give a hoot what people think. Especially when they’re trying to define or place me in all these little psychological / personality boxes.

I will listen to arguments, caution, advice [ words of selfishnessfoolishness in disguise ] and I will graciously thank the givee of this information. But I will make my own choices. If I believe in something, I will go for it.

Let the world laugh, let the world burn.

5.0 It’s about time I visited a dentist.

It’s been a long road from an Indian medical specialist going by the name of Dr. Karama. Dr Karama was a bit of a personal doctor in Lugazi. He stitched my leg when I got a deep cut from over-excitement after acing my class, he gave me shots for all those ailments little kids suffer, but most importantly, most most importantly Dr Karama pulled my tooth out.

He was the first and last dentist I have visited. The process was so painful, so mind-numbingly unbearable for an 8 year old, that I made me vow I’d never get a tooth pulled out again. Brushing became a religion. In my Senior 1, I saw the beginnings of a cavity and brushed ferociously till it went away.

But now, it’s about time I saw a dentist. Not because something is wrong,  but just to get a once over so I know everything’s still alright. 18 years is a long time.

I always thought being a “scanner” was wrong too, but I’m learning to use it as a strength. It is afterall a gift I cannot blithely ignore.

      Dombolo? Dude. Heck no.

18 years without an incident. Go me.

I remember my aunt telling me about Teddy Pendergrass when I was a kid that made me want to meet him. Was it that if a kid could say his name, he would give them a sweet. Some story like that.
