of comic books, poetry and wormholes

I’m a huge comic book and science fiction fan, as in goesthroughwikipediareadingbackgroundspowersuniversesandorigins type of fan.

After watching too much He-Man, Power Rangers and X-Men and all the usual science fiction thingamajigs, including reading Star Wars novels and what not, in my S.1, I wrote my first (and only) comic book. It was a short story actually, with a few illustrations thrown in for good measure, Hardy Boys style.

It was called “Radon Defenders”, and the premise was this;

A super teen geekwas building the world’s first Radon particle accelerator, in the hopes of being able to explore dark matter and wormholes. One night, while his parents are away, he invites his buddies over for a demo, as the machine was almost done. The usual drama occurs, lightning strikes, machine malfunctions and there is a blinding light. They wake up, find themselves on a dark lonely planet, somehow, the machine has torn a wormhole in the fabric of space-time and they end up in an alternate universe, endowed with super-powers.

Right.

Carrying on…

Obviously, I didn’t have the resources to go into mass production, glossy cover art and all, so only one comic/novel was produced, on a ruled exercise book, Musana, I think. Funny thing is, everyone who read it loved it. To this day, I wonder what was wrong with them. Someone even asked me a couple of weeks back what happened to that story.

A few years later, I began playing around with poetry, mostly because I loved reading and more so because it allowed me to express my inner feelings eloquently. Contrary to what most people might think, I’m an introvert, not much of a talker, prefer to be on the listening side of a conversation. So writing opened up a whole new avenue of self expression.

Around 2002, I opened up a site on Geocities, unfortunately, it got taken down a few years later after Yahoo bought Geocities (and shut down the service?).

I was looking through my archive today and I found some poetry that I had put up on the site. I wrote them from 1999 to 2001, it was so corny, I cringed when I read some of them, but I had to share it anyways.

So, without further ado, I present…

daily dwellings

by the fire of yonder sun i awake.
my cup of morn breakfast i take.
outside another created day you make,
godly beauty, free, for the layman’s sake.

as i rush to start the day,
help me, this i always pray.
that today will be more than gay,
and your glory by my side always stay.

for in today’s hurried, paced time,
every hour the clocks and watches chime,
life is not and should never be a mime.

clothe me in thine righteuos hue,
that as the world demands of me what is due,
i shall not the evil pleasures pursue,
but i shall always dwell in you.

Daily Dwellings was a finalist in some Poetry.com competition and they wanted to put it in a coffee table poetry book. Something happened and I couldn’t send back a confirmation, so I missed out on that.

And yes, I had a loathing for capital letters that still lingers to this day.

morning

raindrops fall, slowly fading away
a sleepy world struggles to awaken
and to the east, sunlight subdues the night
bathing the hills in a glorious kaleidoscope

rhyme and reason return to rule
innocent gathers itself in a pool
pride and dignity… what a ruse
daylight only seems to confuse

birds begin their merry serenade
the shades still swathed in jade
calling out to the sleepy head
which shall it be? surely not bed!

whisper of fate

the sombre quiet of morning reigns
a defeated moon slowly wanes
life filters through the window panes
memories refreshened, awakening the pains

looking back, wishing, hoping, all in vain
the day beckons.. ‘awaken, oh sleeper
move forward… on to your destiny’
a glance into the past, a trembling sigh

what was is no more, what is, exists
past and present, a battle that persists
excelsior… onward, upward, do not resist
the future awaits, calls, gently insists

a whisper hangs in the air, unsaid thoughts.
a forgotten destiny, forgiven wrongs
it matters no more, I will return
but first, I will survive.

They get even cornier after that, so I’ll spare you the trauma. There’s one particularly sad one that I just can’t find. Would fit perfectly well with The Dark Side. Oh well, some other day.

Enjoy your day peoples, and see you at the impromptu BHH, if it’s still on.

Ever since I learnt that you are the Dark Knight, I’ve been moody because you are too good at many things. It’s not fair.

@ Mudamuli, the good Lord blesses abundantly, but trust me, it does come with its price. Boy does it come with a price…

@ Sybella, the six-pack is being worked on, hehehe.

@ B2B, laugh away man. If I found this on someone else’s blog, I’d have a righteous fit. But hey, we all gotta start somewhere, ne c’est pas?

    1. Who? :D
    2. SoloKing …/ Rogue King…/ and the Dark Knight are the same person. But, to enigmatically answer your question, this is Rogue King…

although I think the Dark Knight wrote that last poem back in 2k1.

The poems get progressively better actually. :)
That’s not saying they are particularly good though. :P

I’m sure if you wrote one now, it would rock.

Me, likey the picture up there with u straddling the guitar.

Kati now, lemme arrange to develop a crush on the guy that plays the guitar…seeing as there’s too many of u, I shall choose to crash on King Solomon. DK is the boda boda loving man and Rogue King is the Restauranteur. I want the King who had all those wives and concubines.

Am I the only one that skips over poetry? Ever! I don’t read it. Don’t get it most times. It used to touch me when I was a teenager but I grew up and moved on. And I’d like to read your comic.

@Antipop, oba you’ll be the first to read it. Radon is NOT a geeky thing to know it S.1, lol. It was in chemistry, you know, that subject where they teach about bunsen burners and you mix stuff in test tubes… yeah, that was chem, remember?

@Cruella, crush huh? hmmm… we should talk more about that job offer… *evil grin*

@Carlo… am I the only one that skips over your comments? LOL, just kidding, put down the shotgun.

@Lulu, I loved Enid Blyton. My favourite to this day is “The Three little Brownies”, aka Hop Skip and Jump.
