of sundays and tweets and [ shout outs ]
22 Feb
I love Sundays. They have this delightfuly lazy aspect to them. None of the hustles of a programme packed Saturday, nor the trepidation of a Monday. Sundays are languorously in between. [ TRP say what? ] And today was awesome.
Twitter, at 220/= per SMS, is a waste of precious airtime, to the average Ugandan, unless of course, you work at a telecom company [ hi Darlyne! ] or have 24 hour access to the internet for free [ hi Darlyne!! ].
However, for some reason, I occasionally tweet from my phone. I’ve somehow transceded the allusion that airtime is expensive and I see it as a neccessity. Painful? Yes. Irrelevant? Perhaps? Capitalistic? Most definitely. But a necessity nonetheless. [ Salutations, Comrade, and Communist-Damsel ]
But still, I occasionally indulge the rebel in me and lavishly spend airtime tweeting. Today I spent a whooping 2200/= on tweets! Yes, sweetheart, I know I should’ve called you, but… [ you know who you are! sup gorgeous! ]
So, to give a rough summary of my day, here are the tweets!
But, wait. A small backstory is in order.
I woke up itching to go to church. I hadn’t been there in close to a month, so I was running on empty. Sermon was from 3 John , Faith in Jesus. Very apt, very relevant. [ howdy Walkonby ]
After the sermon, I thought of going for a coffee thing [ Tandra! Wasgoinon? ] But I took a slow stroll to Steers, got myself a caramel dip. Yes, I was feeling pretty self indulgent today and sat down to scribble certain happenings in my journal [ b2b, w'sup dawg! ]
There’s something about Steers on a Sunday, decent traffic, none of the chaos and the occasional eye candy, which back in the day we’d call optical nutrition. [ Igiss, you wit me player? ] But I was feeling particularly serene today, so I focused on the caramel dip and my notebook.
So anyways, half an hour later, I’m out. It was a nice cool day and we’d gotten our first rain shower in weeks, so I decide to walk back to the taxi park.
And then it hit me, why not walk all the way back home. [ Johnny23ug, I hear you! ]
And therein started the airtime wastage via twitter. [ MisterThree, how do you keep up? ]
The following happens between 15:00hrs and 18:00hrs. Events happen in Twittime. [ Baz, haven't checked out today's papers... did you do Bad Idea? ]
The text in bold are my Twitter messages, the stuff below each message is current commentary.
Let’s go.
15:08.
Beautiful day for a walk. Decided to take a slow stroll from Steers to Kasubi. Let’s see how far I can go. Approaching Wandegeya.
Met a couple of friends along the way, so I stopped n said the occasional hello. One friend told me he likes walking, and he’d actually walked from town to Bugoloobi once, on a whim. I was like… righteous dude!! [ Remind you of something, Spartakuss? 'sup! ]
15:38
Wandegeya looks so serene without traffic. Wish I had a camera. Heading up!
At this point, all I wanted was a Kawasaki Ninja! [ sup Dante ]. I always dream of riding through Kampala’s empty Sunday streets. And today’s streets were so amazingly empty you could stand in the middle of the road and take photos! [ Tumwijuke, feeling me here? ]
16:10
Ooooh! A basketball court! Must detour!
I decided to pass through the road leading to/past Makerere Garden Courts, and found a basketball court somewhere in that chaos of hostels. I was in pure bliss. I hadn’t played ball in ages and I wasn’t even in ball shoes [ was wearing white American Polos like these. Chanel once asked me how I keep them white... Howdy Chanel! ], but I still molested them Polos a bit and played some ball. It felt good to finally stress my atrophied muscles!
16:59
Passing through one of the worst slums I’ve ever seen. My goodness! Hard to imagine something like this exists near one of Kampala’s busiest hubs.
Seriously, this place was depressing. I was literally walking into people’s homes, right in the middle of the path. The paths were so narrow. Just as you think you’ve reached the end of the path, when you think you’re about to be asked to turn around, another bend appears and the path widens. Then you see a one family throwing polythene trash almost into another family’s joint. But the highlight was seeing this party with these kids in their best garb. It was heartbreaking. [ Nevman, 'sup ]
17:02
Wow! An old lady reading a bible infront of her hut surrounded by filth, booze and coarse language. Talk about perspective.
No comment on this. It was simply touching, humbling, and challenging all at once. And a perfect photo opportunity. [ Scarlett, you'd love it! How you doing? ]
17:12
Finally! Kasubi. Up the hill to the tombs, head down the hill again and I’ll be home!
Civilisation is always a breath of fresh air, but also a reminder that there are people who deserve a little bit more. We cannot afford to always look the other way. [ Much respect to you, Soup Kitchen dude, when are you doing your thang again? ]
17: 17
Okay, i’m not passing by the tombs again without visiting them. Here goes. The famous Kasubi Tombs. Home of dead royalty.
I live like five minutes away from the tombs, but ever since I shifted to Kasubi, I’ve never visited them. So this time I decided I wouldn’t pass by like any other Ugandan. I stepped in and experienced a short but brief sujourn into precolonial Buganda. [ Jackfruity, how you doin? ]
17:36
Tombs were a lot… Briefer than I thought they’d be. A pleasant experience, nonetheless. Again, I wish I had a camera. Heading home now
I plan on going back with a camera! This camera obsession will either make or break me! I’d run out of airtime when I entered the tombs, so I couldn’t tweet realtime. [ Emrys, your turn! ]
17:39
And home sweet home! That was an awesome experience! Need to do it more often!!
Got home only to realise my housemate had eaten my much anticipated lunch! Oh well. A cold shower and guitar practice followed. And then I found Val had been reading my tweets. [ Hi Val! ]
And to everyone else, your shout outs will come soon!! Hope you had a great weekend!

I once walked from my office at Telephone House to my home on Semawata road in Ntinda. I took a bunch of pictures and almost got arrested taking pictures at Kololo airstrip. I loved every minute of it and I would to it again.
You were? Awesome!
But man, all the way to Ntinda?? That was a journey!
I love walking but found it difficult when there is lots of traffic….it must have been pleasant without all the traffic. I also like to have a pal along, just in case I need more hands
You should get one of those camera phones.. They do such Impressive pictures and you’d never worry about missing moments again.
Beware this might increase the airtime spending in terms of mms..You need too talk to Darlyn nicely
Eh Your Majesty,;
What’s with the walking? Do your feet not hurt? Do you not know the process of hailing a boba b? Even I know how to do that … Or maybe not! Dude, we used to walk everywhere back in the day …
First year at college … Class of ’94; and working in town, we walked to New Vision and Monitor and to Sanyu FM in Naguru … And that is how we ruined our shoes. Those were good times.
