the power of a moment
25 Feb
My first introduction to the Dove Awards was in high school, Senior Six. I was fixing someone’s walkman (yes, I had a wicked tech-guy reputation in school), when I asked for some tapes so I could test to see how awesome my work was. He handed me two Dove Awards tapes, and therein began my obsession with contemporary Gospel music.
I discovered the Veggie Tales, Michael W Smith, Twila Paris, Third Day, Fernando Ortega and Chris Rice.
Chris Rice has turned out to be one of my favourite Gospel artists. His lyrics are so simple to the point of being almost childish, but the messages, while simple are amazingly profound. The first song I listened to on those Dove Awards tapes was “The Power of a Moment” and the message stuck with me to this day.
Here’s an excerpt from the lyrics [emphasis mine]:
What am I gonna be when I grow up?
How am I gonna make my mark in history?
And what are they gonna write about me when I’m gone?
These are the questions that shape the way I think about whatmatters
But I have no guarantee of my next heartbeat
And my world’s too big to make a name for myself
And what if no one wants to read about me when I’m gone?
Seems to me that right now’s the only moment that mattersYou know the number of my days
So come paint Your pictures on the canvas in my head
And come write Your wisdom on my heart
And teach me the power of a moment[...]
I get so distracted by my bigger schemes
Show me the importance of the simple things
Like a word, a seed, a thorn, a nail
And a cup of cold water
The first time I heard those words, in the darkness that was my Senior Six and Senior Five, I felt like a door had been opened and was streaming brilliant light into my world. For too long, I had been obsessing about my future, how futile it all seemed, how doomed I was, how nothing ever seemed to work out right. You know, the usual adolescence drama.
But those words gave me comfort, and to this day, when I get a little overwhelmed by what the future holds and what will happen tomorrow, I remember those words, flip on my headphones (if I can) and listen to the song again.
We try too much to control the things we cannot control. Career, family, relationships, business… And all we end up doing is tossing and turning in our beds at night, or pacing up and down in our offices, or dashing from one place to another in the hopes of making ends meet. In the process, we’re losing sleep, getting anxious and messing up our relationships.
I’m not saying don’t dream, or don’t try to make ends meet or don’t hope for a better future.
I’m just saying, every once in a while, it helps to just enjoy the moment. Sing a song, dance, go out for a few minutes and watch the birds, or see a butterfly flutterby. Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, feel the gentle breeze in your face. Watch a silly movie with your kids or your loved one. And enjoy the laughter from the baby that keeps you awake at night.
Discover the power of a moment. The true beauty of life is found in those simple moments.

Look at the birds in the sky. They don’t plant or harvest or gather food into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. You are more valuable than they are, aren’t you?

Wise thoughts!
It’s like whatever I do, I cant stop tossing and turning in my bed at night and wondering why some prayers are taking long to be answered. I’ll try to enjoy the moment. Thank you.
